— Why Rurutu

The sacred
unknown island

Join us on Rurutu, the quietest of the Austral Islands, to spend a week among the humpbacks who come to rest and calve in its shallow reef waters. Six people at most travel together. Every year they make the long crossing from Antarctica to these warm Austral waters, and Rurutu remains one of the quietest places left to witness it, its name in Rurutuan meaning simply "the land of whales."

This is for visionaries, artists, musicians, filmmakers and change-makers anyone drawn to slow down and build a real relationship with these ancient beings, to be moved and inspired by them, and to carry this life-changing experience back into their world as a positive catalyst of change. Only six operators work these waters in the whole season no queues of boats, no engines circling a single whale, so the whales come in over the coral in shallow, clear water, against a bright reef floor.

Hosted by a small, devoted crew who live for ethical encounters the week is tailored intentionally to give you space, and special sessions to support you in the integration of meeting these special creatures, alongside waterfront living, thoughtful meals, photography guidance and genuine island culture, and reflective sessions whether sharing circles, art classes, ecstatic dance, meditation or movement. Our skipper and captain call Rurutu home; theirs is a family that has fished and swum these waters for generations, and it shows in how they know the ocean as their own relative.

— The women's voyage

Why we gather as women

There is a particular potency to women gathering with intention — in ceremony, in circle, in the presence of these ancient creatures.

Here we delve into what it means to invite all the layers of the feminine to be expressed. Within this ceremony with the whales, we are held by the safety of the waters, we invite the primal and soft sides of us to merge within them. Sisterhood circles, embodiment work, space held for whatever wants to be released. Sound and voice exploration that connects to the sacredness of our wombs, calling us back into the innate intuitive knowing.

The whales meet us differently in this sensitivity and receptivity — open hearts call their souls to speak to ours.

This is an exploration for the inner mystics, the earth mamas, the curious ones, the ocean lovers, the one who is yearning to be in circle and learn from these ancient kin — who are the whales. This is a passage for those called to gather this way: to be witnessed, to be held, to invite our creativity to blossom and to remember our gifts and connection to the earth.

— The itinerary

Day by day

Day 01
Arrival
Fly into Papeete, then south to Rurutu on Air Tahiti, the island coming up out of the Pacific — three villages, a volcanic peak at its centre, a reef ring visible from the air. Transfer to Vaitumu, a family-run retreat set directly on the ocean in over a hectare of fruit garden, coral-stone bungalows with the water at the end of the lawn. Settle in, then an opening circle at sunset — offerings to the land and the sea we're about to enter — followed by a first dinner together as a circle of six.
Day 02
First light on the water
A gentle wake, then a morning briefing on the water ethics and what to expect before the boat picks us up right from outside our home and heads out through the pass with its local skipper — a family that has fished and swum these waters for generations. The whales come in over the reef in clear, shallow water rather than open blue. The first encounters are patient and unhurried, entirely on the whale's terms — some days a mother and calf resting close to the boat, other days a long, quiet wait.
Day 03—06
The rhythm
Four more days at sea, weather permitting, up to seven and a half hours a day looking for the whales. No two days are the same — some bring encounters early, others ask for a longer, quieter wait. Mornings on the boat; afternoons at the reef, resting, or an underwater photography session; evenings around the long terrace table as the light goes down over the lagoon. Optional practices are woven through as the days ask — meditation, yoga or breathwork at sunrise, and in the evenings, editing, art classes, sound healing or simply conversation.
Day 07
Departure
A final slow morning at Vaitumu — a closing circle together, a last breakfast in the garden — before transfers back to the airstrip and the flight north to Papeete. A curated digital album of the week follows once you're home: the images, and the week itself, to carry with you.

"Being in the presence of these ancient creatures can be incredibly emotional — they transmit something that is hard to describe or explain. It's just a feeling of being nothing and everything, all at once."
